Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Consultations Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
